TIPS Interns

TIPS offers internships to qualified people to gain professional experience in the economic policy challenges and responses in South Africa and the continent.

Candidates should have the following:

  • A Masters degree in Economics (or be in the process of completing one).
  • A professional or study background on themes related TIPS's focus areas. Specifically, prior research pertaining to technology and innovation, manufacturing value chains, natural resources and/or network infrastructure would be an advantage.

Applicants should also meet the following requirements:

  • A sound knowledge of Excel and a proven ability to handle a data analysis package.
  • Proven writing and presentation skills, with excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • Proven ability to work with others as well as independently and to adhere strictly to deadlines.

Nothembi Mahlangu holds an Honours degree in Economic Science from the University of Witwatersrand and a Bachelor of Commerce in Economics and Econometrics from the University of Johannesburg. She is completing her Master of Commerce in Development Economics at the University of Johannesburg. In 2021, she was awarded the prestigious Post-graduate Merit Award from the University of Witwatersrand in recognition of her outstanding academic accomplishments. Her interests include economic and sustainable development and international trade. Prior to joining TIPS as an intern in January 2024, Nothembi worked as a Government Affairs graduate trainee for a leading global US automotive OEM.
Sakhile Ndlovu holds a BA in Public Management and Governance and a BA Honours in Politics and International Relations from the University of Johannesburg, both attained with distinction. He is currently completing his MPhil in Economics specialising in industrial policy, from the same university. With research and teaching experience in the academic sector, Sakhile is an aspiring Development Economist and has research interests in industrial policy and industrial development, financialisation, emerging markets, and the political economy of South Africa.
Sandile Mbatha holds an Honours degree in Econometrics and a Bachelor of Commerce in Economics and Econometrics from the University of Johannesburg. He is completing his Master of Commerce in Development Economics at the University of Johannesburg. In 2024, He won the prestigious Nedbank and Old Mutual budget speech essay competition (postgraduate category). His interests include regional integration, foreign direct investment, regional value chains, industrial policy and industrial development.
