Main Bulletin: The Real Economy Bulletin - Third Quarter 2023 In this edition GDP growth: In seasonally adjusted terms, Statistics South Africa reported that the GDP declined by 0.2% in the third quarter of 2023, meaning the economy shrank in year-on year-terms. The main driver of the quarterly contraction was a 10% fall in agricultural production. Manufacturing value added shrank 1.2% in the quarter, but was still larger than a year earlier. Eskom and Transnet output both dropped around a quarter off their peaks, increasingly dragging down industrialisation. Read more. Nothembi Mahlangu

Nothembi Mahlangu holds an Honours degree in Economic Science from the University of Witwatersrand and a Bachelor of Commerce in Economics and Econometrics from the University of Johannesburg. She is completing her Master of Commerce in Development Economics at the University of Johannesburg. In 2021, she was awarded the prestigious Post-graduate Merit Award from the University of Witwatersrand in recognition of her outstanding academic accomplishments. Her interests include economic and sustainable development and international trade. Prior to joining TIPS as an intern in January 2024, Nothembi worked as a Government Affairs graduate trainee for a leading global US automotive OEM.

Nomvuyo Guma is the Chief Director for Microeconomic Policy at the National Treasury, managing a team of 10 Economists, responsible for sectoral policy analysis, structural reforms, and green economy issues, as well as the Co-Head of Operation Vulindlela (OV).
