Waste tyres are one of the most problematic waste streams in the country. While figures vary, it is estimated that 12 million (about 312 780 tonnes) waste tyres enter the waste stream per annum, with an estimated 1.65 million tonnes stockpiled post 2015, and between 15 million and 30 million tonnes sitting in historical pre-2016 stockpiles. An estimated 93 400 tonnes of tyres were collected for processing in 2021 (about 26% of waste tyres generated), with 22 700 tonnes of collected tyres processed (about 11% of waste tyres generated per annum). The growing volume of tyres and the stockpile are both a financially and environmentally unsustainable situation.
